Top Four Hurricane Preparation Tips- By: Tara Smith

Description : With the increase in the number of damaging hurricanes in recent years many individuals are wondering what they should do in order to prepare for the coming of a hurricane. Although you never know how hard a hurricane will hit in your particular area it is wise to be prepared in order to avoid being left without the necessities should you be hit hard. It is always better to be prepared rather than have to scramble to protect yourself and obtain the things you need after the fact.

•The first step you will want to take in preparation for a hurricane is buying all of the supplies you will need for at least a week. Often cities are left without power for an extended period of time following a hurricane which makes it difficult to get the supplies you need from a store after the hurricane hits. Not to mention that there is usually a lack of supplies due to the many unprepared individuals who find themselves rushing to the store at the last minute. By gathering supplies at the beginning of the hurricane season you will not have to worry about the lack of anything when the time comes. Supplies that you may want and/or need include non perishables such as canned and dry goods, batteries, flashlights, water, a battery operated radio so that you can keep up on warnings, plywood to board up your windows in case it becomes necessary, matches, blankets, and charcoal to cook on in the event that you are without power. All of these items will make it much easier to live through the consequences of a hurricane and some may even save your life.
The next step you will want to take in preparation for hurricane season is gathering all of your important documents in putting them in a weather proof container that can be easily located. Insurance papers, birth certificates, social security cards, passports, marriage licenses, and wills are all examples of the documentation you will want to be able to locate should you have to leave the home or keep dry should your home become flooded.

Next you will want to go over your home with your family in order to ensure that everyone knows where such things as gas and electrical shut offs are located. This is often an overlooked issue that can be dangerous if not considered.
You will also want to know the area you live in well. Knowing the correct evacuation routes for where you live can be a matter of life and death. Often evacuation routes get clogged because people rush to the nearest one rather then the one specified for their neighborhood and if things get bad this can be very dangerous. Should an evacuation be necessary it is important to leave the area in an orderly fashion in order to protect the safety of everyone.

Hurricanes can be extremely dangerous but if you take the right precautions you are much more likely to save your own as well as others lives in the event that you are hit by a strong storm.
